Every single day of our lives we face challenges. It is a part of life. However there are times when these challenges might seem overwhelming. There are times when these challenges might seem insurmountable, just to much for you to deal with alone. Of course, seeking some assistance in these times is a good idea. But! The real trick to overcoming these seemingly impossible challenges that build up and overwhelm us is….. Your mindset!
Yes! Your mindset! YOUR mindset! You actually have the ability within you to face any challenge. Even though it might not feel this way at certain times. You can, and usually all it takes is a shift in your own mindset. In this blog we will briefly discuss some of the best ways to master your own mindset. However, if you really want to become the true master of your mindset I would recommend buying this Ebook by Robert Wildfield “Mastering Your Mindset: Harnessing the power of a positive attitude”
What is a Mindset?
Your mindset is more then just a fleeting attitude. More then just a moment of self doubt. Your mindset is your complete mental framework that influences how you perceive the world around you. It is a fundamental part of human psychology and encompasses beliefs, feelings, and values which all shape our responses to events in the world around us.
So how is our mindset formed?
Our mindset and attitudes are shaped by many different factors. Our understanding what has caused us to view an event or object in a certain way is the best start to overcoming it. Some of the most influential factors shaping our attitudes are:
- Experiences: Past experiences and interactions contribute to the development of attitudes. Positive or negative experiences can shape how we perceive similar situations in the future.
- Upbringing and Culture: Our upbringing, family values, and cultural background influence the attitudes we develop. Cultural norms and societal values play a significant role in shaping our beliefs and behaviours.
- Social Influences: Peers, family members, role models, and media exposure all contribute to the formation of attitudes. Social interactions and group dynamics can reinforce or challenge our existing attitudes.
- Information Processing: The information we receive and how we process it impacts our attitudes. Exposure to different viewpoints, education, and access to information shape our beliefs and perspectives.
Do you have a fixed or growth mindset?
The factors about can all contribute either positively or negatively to our mindset development. This will usually result in either a fixed mindset, or a growth mindset. Spoiler alert… Having a growth mindset is far more beneficial to personal development and ultimate success. So what is the difference between these two mindset types?
Fixed Mindset
- Belief in Static Abilities: People with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed traits. They think they have a set amount of these qualities, and they can’t do much to change them.
- Avoidance of Challenges: They often avoid challenges to prevent failure and to avoid exposing their perceived limitations.
- Response to Feedback: Individuals with a fixed mindset may ignore feedback or take it personally because it challenges their self-image.
- Effort Perception: They might view effort as a sign of lack of talent or inadequacy, believing that if they have to work hard, they are not inherently good at something.
- Reaction to Failure: Failure is seen as a reflection of their abilities rather than an opportunity for learning. They might give up easily when faced with setbacks.
Growth Mindset
- Belief in Developable Abilities: People with a growth mindset believe that their abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning.
- Embracing Challenges: They embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and development, seeing them as a way to improve their skills.
- Response to Feedback: Those with a growth mindset welcome feedback as a valuable tool for improvement and learning. They see it as an opportunity to understand their strengths and weaknesses better.
- Effort Perception: They view effort as essential to mastery and success, understanding that hard work and perseverance contribute to improvement.
- Reaction to Failure: Failure is seen as a learning experience rather than a reflection of their abilities. They use it as a stepping stone to refine their approach and persist toward their goals.
Now you might have just looked at the comparison and said to yourself. Shit! I definitely have a fixed mindset, I guess I am screwed. Well you just stop right there because not all is lost! Oh no my friend, I have fantastic news for you. By simply mastering your mindset you should be easily be able to shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.
Oh, and I have even better news. It is not that difficult. Infact, you have already taken the first step by becoming self-aware of the problem. Now that you know what the problem is, and that you need to make changes you are in a far better position then you were 30 seconds ago. But we wont stop now! Let’s chat about actual actions that you can start taking right now to make the shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.
Start Embracing Challenges
Yes, most of us prefer to avoid challenges whenever it is possible. I get it, I mean why make life more difficult for yourself. It is tough enough after all, why add on to lifes endless onslaught of obstacles. But people only avoid challenges when they are seen as challenges. Would you avoid an opportunity? No of course not.
Stop viewing challenges as obstacles, start viewing them as opportunities. Start understanding that each and every challenge you face is an opportunity to learn, develop new skills, and refine existing ones. This approach nurtures a proactive attitude, where instead of being scared of obstacles, you are motivated by the potential for growth and improvement.
You need to put in the effort and have persistence
In order for you to have a growth mindset you need to put in the time, put in the work, and you need to see it through. You need to know in your heart that persistence and effort will eventually lead to you achieving your goals. This simple belief is often enough to fuel your motivation and keep you going when things get tough.
Remember, setbacks are nothing but temporary hurdles. They are hurdles that you can jump! Perseverance not only builds character but also enhances self-confidence, as each small achievement reinforces the belief that hard work and dedication will bring you positive results.
Learn from feedback
If you have not been good at receiving constructive criticism in the past, then this might be incredibly difficult for you. But, by changing your attitude to feedback might be the biggest shift in your growth mindset. And could potentially have the biggest impact. You need to consciously remind yourself that you want to identify areas where you can enhance your skills and abilities.
By accepting that you are not perfect, and welcoming feedback in the form of constructive criticism you are committing to continuous improvement. With this mindset each piece of feedback, whether positive or constructive, contributes to ongoing learning and professional evolution. Ultimately, by integrating feedback into your growth process, you will cultivate a proactive and adaptive attitude that propels you toward achieving your goals.
Overcoming common mindset blocks
Even with the best intentions, sometimes our subconscious mind just does everything in it’s power to prevent us from taking the necessary steps to grow and improve ourselves. Knowing and understanding some of these common mindset blocks is the first step to moving past them.
Fear of failure
One of the most common mindsets that holds us back is the fear of failure. I get it! Failing sucks! Especially when your failure is public and you know many people will be watching. Being scared of failing often leads us to not take risks that could potentially have huge rewards, even though the only risk is failure.
Just think about that for one second. You give up on a dream, or an idea that could be life changing just because you do not want people to know you failed. What if you don’t fail? But even if you do! Who cares. If you can start to view failure as just another stepping stone, just another lesson learnt, life will get infinitely better for you very quickly.
Dealing with perfectionism
This is something that I do not suffer with, fortunately. However I know that for many people the thing that is holding them back is their unrealistic idea of perfection that they hold for everything they do. You might be one of them, and then you will understand that many people feel that if it can’t be done perfectly now then rather wait until it can.
But that time might never come. It is far better to get it done now, even if it is not perfect. Do not worry about what others will say. You can work on it and perfect it slowly over time if you need to. But done is better then perfect, always!
Managing self-doubt
Oh yes, probably one of the most common mindset issues us mere mortals have to deal with. Good old self-doubt. Every-single human alive has felt that they were not good enough, that they were not the right person for the job. We all question our worth and abilities, but some more then others.
If your self-doubt is holding you back you need to take action. Positive affirmations can be a great way to deal with self-doubt. Tell yourself that you are good enough, smart enough and strong enough. Tell yourself that you can do it and that you will do it. Because you can!
Conclusion
We all encounter obstacles and challenges in our daily lives, and sometimes, they can feel like they’re just too much to handle. But remember, the real secret to overcoming these seemingly insurmountable barriers is… your mindset!
That’s right—your mindset! By adopting a growth mindset, you can transform these hurdles into opportunities for growth and development. Embrace challenges as chances to learn, view effort as a path to improvement, and welcome feedback as a tool for growth. It’s not about avoiding difficulties but facing them head-on with a positive attitude.
Don’t let fear of failure, perfectionism, or self-doubt hold you back. Recognize these common mindset blocks and address them with practical strategies like positive affirmations and gradual improvements. Remember, progress is more important than perfection, and setbacks are just stepping stones on your journey to success.
You’ve already taken a crucial first step by exploring these ideas. Now, it’s time to put them into action. Start small, stay persistent, and keep shifting your mindset towards growth and positivity.
