How to Find a Job on Faceboo [A Complete guide]

Using Facebook to find jobs
Share with a friend:

In February 2017 Facebook launched its job board feature, where employers can advertise jobs directly on their company page or on a specific jobs page. This allowed job seekers to apply to these vacancies immediately and directly through Facebook.

In this article, we take a brief looking at Facebook jobs, how to apply on the social media site, and most importantly how to stay safe while doing so.

How to find jobs on Facebook

Jobs can be found in three different places when using Facebook:

  • On the jobs Page
  • On a company’s Facebook page
  • On various Facebook job groups

Let’s look at each one separately

The Facebook Jobs Page

Firstly you will need to locate the jobs tab somewhere on the website or app that you are using. This should not be too hard and if you are really struggling you can always use the search feature and search for jobs.

Once you find the tab click on it and you will be directed to the jobs page. Here you will be able to search and sort all job listings by location, industry, skill, job type, etc. If you find a position that you think might be a match you can simply click on the “Apply Now” button which will take you to a page that already has all your details pre-completed with your name, education, and any other information that’s public on your site. Make sure that this info is correct!

If you are happy with the info you can simply click send and your application will be sent to the company advertising the vacancy via Facebook messenger. This is how the company will reply to you if they find your application to be of interest.

A Companies Facebook Page

The application process here is exactly the same as when using the Facebook Jobs Page above. The only difference here is that you are actually directly targeting a specific company.

There are many reasons that you might want to do this. One might be that you have always wanted to work for a specific company as you identify closely with their core values. This might mean that you check their Facebook Page on a weekly basis waiting for a job opening and then applying if a suitable one becomes available. Another reason could be that you heard via the grapevine that a company has a vacancy and instead of searching through hundreds of other jobs you would like to go directly to this specific vacancy.

For the sake of this article, I am also going to consider recruitment companies under this umbrella as they will also list the vacancies that they are recruiting for on their Page. Some recruitment companies will use the Jobs Feature, however many will simply post the vacancy directly to their Page wall.

On Facebook Groups

There are many Facebook Groups that are set up specifically for recruiters and companies with job vacancies to advertise their positions. It is not hard to find a few area-specific groups and join these for regular job updates. However, please let me caution you at this point that these groups are often full of unscrupulous scammers who are looking for an easy victim.

There are absolutely no Facebook job groups that I have come across which are completely scammer free, but some are definitely better than others. Below are a few groups that I would recommend.

Jobs911

These are generally speaking well-managed groups that have a lower than average number of scams. And when they do appear the admins do their best to remove them ASAP. Commenting is quickly turned off on the posts which means that the latest posts are usually at the top of the page, not the post with the latest comment. These groups are area specific so to find your local one search for Jobs911 + “your city”.

Jobs Hiring

Also a decent range of groups for job seekers to use. Again these groups are generally fairly scam free. They have also added a number of recruiters and experts such as myself to become group admins. Unfortunately, I am not as active as I should be but I am sure the rest are. Again, these groups are area specific so to find your local group search “your city” + jobs Hiring.

Hospitality Connection

This is an industry-specific group, the hospitality industry of course. However, it is without a shadow of a doubt the best-run job group on Facebook. The group has a few “pre-approved” posters that represent the top recruiters and hospitality companies in the industry. Other first-time or once-off posts are carefully screened before allowing them onto the group. If you are searching for a job in the hospitality industry then this is the only group you will need!

Avoiding scams on Facebook job pages and groups

Scams are everywhere, you can’t avoid them only watch out for them. It is not easy to tell you exactly how to avoid them, however, two very important rules apply. 1) If it sounds too good to be true it probably is! 2) If your gut feeling is that something is off ask someone for a second opinion.

Mistakes people often make on Facebook jobs.

I see it every day. Job seekers act way too casual when searching for a job on Facebook, often to the point of irritating the job poster and ensuring that they will never get called for an interview.

Do not do these things:

  1. Do not comment on a job post with “Interested.”
  2. Do not comment with your phone number or Email address on a job post.
  3. Do not get into discussions with other job seekers in the comments of a job post.
  4. Do not post your CV in the comments or on a Facebook group ever.
  5. Do not get sidetracked by your friend’s posts or videos while browsing for jobs.

Do these things:

  1. Do clean up your Facebook profile
  2. Do apply for the position by following the directions in the post
  3. Do make sure that all your information is accurate and up to date

Conclusion

While Facebook can be a great addition to your job search routine if used correctly, I would not recommend that you only use it. There are many other resources available to job seekers and limiting yourself to just one seems foolish. Check out these job search websites which might help you as well.
