I recently published an article on the top 13 websites to use for your job search. And although these are great sites they are by no means the only websites available for job seekers to use. There are many smaller niche sites that focus on specific industries or companies. One such website is the GPG Professional Job Centre, which advertises positions available with the Gauteng Provincial Government.

If you are currently seeking new employment it may be worth your while to check out what vacancies the Gauteng Province has to offer. Assuming you stay in Gauteng of course. This article will give you a detailed explanation of how to use the GPG Professional job center website and answer some common questions users might have. You might also be interested in this article on how to find South African government jobs in 2021.

The GPG Professional Job Centre is the Gauteng Provincial Government’s official online recruitment platform. It is the one place where all Gauteng government vacancies are published, and the one place where you apply for them. Whether you are looking for your first government job or trying to move up within the public service, this portal is your starting point.

This guide covers everything you need to know: what the GPG Professional Job Centre is, how to register, how to search for jobs, how to apply correctly, what documents you need, and how to fix the technical problems that trip up thousands of applicants every year.

What Is the GPG Professional Job Centre?

The GPG Professional Job Centre (GPG PJC) is an online job board operated by the Gauteng Provincial Government. It was established to centralise all government recruitment in Gauteng, making it easier for job seekers to find and apply for positions across dozens of provincial departments from a single portal.

Every Gauteng government department, from Health and Education to Infrastructure Development and Finance, uses this portal to advertise vacancies and receive applications. New positions are posted regularly, and the range of roles is extremely wide: from cleaners and drivers at entry level to medical officers, engineers, and senior managers at professional level.

The platform is completely free. There is no cost to register, no cost to browse vacancies, and no cost to submit applications. Any person who asks you to pay a fee to access GPG jobs or to guarantee you an interview is running a scam.

Scam warning: The GPG Professional Job Centre is free. No legitimate GPG recruitment process requires payment. If anyone contacts you claiming to be from the GPG and asks for money to process your application, secure an interview, or arrange employment, report them to the South African Police Service.

Who Should Use the GPG Professional Job Centre?

The portal is relevant to a wide range of job seekers. You should be using it if any of the following apply to you:

  • You live in Gauteng and want stable, permanent employment with the provincial government
  • You are a recent graduate looking for a government internship or learnership in Gauteng
  • You are a healthcare professional (nurse, doctor, pharmacist, social worker) looking for public sector employment
  • You are a teacher or education official looking for a position in a Gauteng school or district
  • You are looking for an entry-level government position with matric as your highest qualification
  • You currently work for the Gauteng government and want to apply for a promoted or transferred position
  • You live outside Gauteng but are willing to relocate for a government position

One important note: if you are looking for national government jobs (not Gauteng provincial), the correct platform is the DPSA Vacancy Circular published at dpsa.gov.za, not the GPG portal. If you are looking for Johannesburg municipal jobs specifically, visit joburg.org.za. The GPG portal is specifically for Gauteng Provincial Government departments.

How to Register on the GPG Professional Job Centre

You can browse available vacancies without registering, but you cannot apply for any position until you have created a profile. Registration is free and takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes if you have your information ready. Complete it carefully the first time — a poorly completed profile causes the ‘Incomplete Profile’ error that blocks thousands of applicants from being able to apply.

Before You Start: Have These Ready

  • Your South African ID number (this will be your username)
  • A working email address you check regularly (not a shared address)
  • A working cell phone number
  • Details of your highest qualification: institution, qualification name, year completed
  • Details of your most recent employer or current employment

Step-by-Step Registration

  1. Go to the portal. Visit jobs.gauteng.gov.za in your web browser. Chrome is the most compatible browser for the GPG portal.
  2. Click ‘Register Profile’. This button appears in the left-hand menu on the home page.
  3. Complete the registration form. Enter your ID number (which becomes your username), your email address, a password, a security question, and your basic personal details. Every field must be completed.
  4. Submit the form. Once submitted, your basic profile is created. You will need to continue building your full profile before you can apply.
  5. Complete your full profile. After registration, go to the ‘Update Profile’ section and complete every section: personal details, contact details, qualifications, and work experience. This step is essential. If any section is incomplete, you will see the ‘Incomplete Profile’ error and the Apply button will not appear on vacancies.
  6. Save each section separately. Do not try to complete the entire profile in one sitting and save at the end. Save each section (personal details, qualifications, experience) immediately after filling it in. If your session times out before you save, you will lose what you entered.

Profile completeness is critical: The most common technical problem on the GPG portal is the ‘Incomplete Profile’ error. It appears when any section of your profile has not been saved correctly. Take 20 extra minutes when completing your profile to re-enter and save each section even if it appears filled. A few minutes of care at this stage prevents weeks of frustration later.

How to Search for Jobs on the GPG Professional Job Centre

Once your profile is registered, you can search for vacancies in two ways:

  • Browse by department: Click the ‘Browse Jobs’ button in the left-hand menu, then select a specific Gauteng government department to see all current vacancies within that department. This is useful if you know which department you want to work for.
  • Search by keyword: Use the search bar below the left-hand menu to search by job title, qualification, or keyword. For example, searching ‘nurse’ will return all current nursing vacancies across Gauteng departments.

Each vacancy listing shows the job title, a reference number, the annual salary, and the closing date. Click ‘View’ to read the full job specification before you decide whether to apply.

How to Read a GPG Vacancy Advertisement

Every GPG vacancy advertisement contains the same structure. Understanding what each section means helps you apply correctly:

  • Reference number: This is the unique code assigned to the vacancy (for example, REFS/048329). You must include this reference number on your Z83 form when applying. It is also what you quote if you call to follow up.
  • Salary level: Government salaries are organised into salary levels, typically from Level 3 (entry-level support) through to Level 12 and above (senior management). The annual salary range listed is the package for that level. See the section below on salary levels for more detail.
  • Requirements (minimum requirements): These are the non-negotiable qualifications, registrations, and experience you must have. If you do not meet every requirement listed in this section, do not apply. Your application will be screened against these criteria and you will be disqualified.
  • Skills and competencies: These are desirable but not always mandatory. If you have them, list them explicitly in your CV. If you do not have all of them, you may still qualify if you meet the minimum requirements.
  • Duties: This section describes what the job involves. Use it to tailor your CV to show you have relevant experience in these specific areas.
  • Enquiries: Each vacancy lists a contact person and number for role-specific questions. Use this contact for questions about the position itself, not for follow-up on your application.
  • Applications: This section states where and how to apply. For most GPG vacancies, this is the online portal. Some vacancies specify additional requirements, such as submitting a Z83 form. Read this section carefully for every position.

How to Apply for a GPG Job: Step by Step

  1. Find a vacancy you qualify for. Use the search or browse functions to find a current vacancy. Read the full advertisement and confirm you meet every minimum requirement before proceeding.
  2. Prepare your documents. Before you click Apply, have all required documents ready: your completed Z83 form, your updated CV, certified copies of your ID, and certified copies of relevant qualifications. See the documents section below for the full list.
  3. Log in to your account. Log in at jobs.gauteng.gov.za using your ID number as your username and your chosen password.
  4. Click Apply on the vacancy. Navigate to the vacancy and click the ‘Apply’ button. If this button does not appear, check whether your profile is fully complete (see Troubleshooting section below).
  5. Complete the online application form. Fill in all required fields in the application form. Include the vacancy reference number exactly as it appears in the advertisement.
  6. Complete the screening questionnaire. Most GPG applications include a screening questionnaire. Answer every question honestly and accurately. Dishonest answers are grounds for disqualification, even after appointment.
  7. Upload your documents. Upload certified copies of your ID, Z83 form, CV, and qualifications. You must upload documents with every application, even if you applied before and uploaded the same documents previously.
  8. Submit and record your reference number. After submission, you will receive a unique reference number via SMS or email. Save this number immediately. It is the only way to follow up on your application if needed.

Late applications are not accepted: Once the closing date for a vacancy has passed, the system will not allow you to apply and the department will not accept late submissions under any circumstances. Set calendar reminders for the closing dates of vacancies you want to apply for and submit at least two days before the deadline.

Documents Required for Every GPG Application

Incomplete documentation is one of the top reasons GPG applications are rejected, often after the shortlisting stage when a candidate discovers their qualification certificate or professional registration is missing. Prepare all documents before you start your application:

Document Details Important Notes
South African ID document Certified copy of your green ID book or Smart ID card. For the Smart ID card, copy both sides on the same page. Certification must be done by SAPS (South African Police Service) at no cost. Documents must have been certified within 6 months. Uncertified or expired certifications will disqualify your application.
Completed Z83 form The Z83 is the official government employment application form, effective from 1 January 2021. All fields must be completed and signed. Download it free from the GPG portal (jobs.gauteng.gov.za) or dpsa.gov.za/documents. Using an old Z83 form (pre-January 2021) will result in automatic disqualification. Do not leave any field blank. If a field does not apply to you, write N/A.
Comprehensive CV A detailed CV listing all your qualifications, work experience, skills, and contact details. Must be attached alongside the Z83. The CV is reviewed alongside the Z83. Ensure consistency between the two documents. Inconsistencies raise questions about accuracy.
Certified academic qualifications Certified copies of all relevant qualification certificates: matric, diplomas, degrees, professional certificates. Every qualification you list on your CV must be supported by a certified certificate. Unverified qualifications are a leading cause of disqualification after shortlisting.
Professional registration certificates (where applicable) If the role requires professional registration (e.g. nursing council, HPCSA, SAICA, SACPVP), you must submit a certified copy of your current registration certificate. Ensure your registration is current and not lapsed. An expired professional registration will disqualify you even if your qualifications are otherwise in order.

The Z83 Form: What You Need to Know

The Z83 is the official South African public service employment application form. The current version has been in use since 1 January 2021, and using any older version will result in automatic disqualification. Here is what you need to know:

  • Download the form: Get the most recent Z83 from jobs.gauteng.gov.za or from dpsa.gov.za/documents. Both the standard PDF and an editable version are available for download.
  • Complete every field: Do not leave any field blank. If a field does not apply to your situation, write ‘N/A’. Leaving fields empty is treated as an incomplete form.
  • Sign the form: The form must be physically signed. A digital signature is not accepted. If you complete the editable version on a computer, print it and sign it by hand.
  • Match your ID details: Your name, ID number, and date of birth on the Z83 must exactly match your ID document. Any discrepancy will raise a flag.
  • Include the reference number: The specific reference number for the vacancy you are applying for must appear on the form. If you apply for multiple positions, each application needs its own Z83 with the correct reference number.

Government Salary Levels: What to Expect

Gauteng government salaries are structured according to the Public Service Salary System. Understanding salary levels helps you identify appropriate positions and set realistic expectations:

  • Salary Level 3 (approximately R216,000 to R255,000 per year): Entry-level administrative and support positions such as cleaners, general workers, messengers, and basic administrative assistants. Typically requires Grade 10 to 12.
  • Salary Level 5 (approximately R348,000 to R411,000 per year): Administrative clerks, data capturers, and junior support officers. Typically requires Grade 12.
  • Salary Level 7 (approximately R444,000 to R524,000 per year): Senior administrative roles, junior professional posts. Typically requires a diploma or degree.
  • Salary Level 8 to 9 (approximately R516,000 to R684,000 per year): Middle management, professional specialist roles. Typically requires a degree and relevant experience.
  • Salary Level 11 to 12 (approximately R900,000 to R1.2 million per year): Senior management and director-level positions. Requires relevant degree, substantial experience, and Senior Management Service (SMS) pre-entry certificate.

Government salary packages include employer contributions to pension, medical aid, and other benefits. The total cost to company (the package) is different from the take-home pay. When comparing government salaries to private sector offers, factor in the full package value.

What Kinds of Jobs Are Available? Departments and Common Roles

Varies by role: Grade 10 to 12 for support roles; degree or professional registration for clinical roles.

Department of Infrastructure Development Engineers (civil, electrical, structural, mechanical), quantity surveyors, project managers, artisans, construction workers, property officers. Grade 12 for artisans and construction; degree or diploma for technical and engineering roles.

Department of Finance Finance officers, budget analysts, accountants, auditors, supply chain management officers, administrative clerks. Grade 12 for admin; BCom or equivalent for professional finance roles.
Department of e-Government IT support technicians, systems analysts, software developers, network administrators, data analysts, project managers. IT diploma, degree, or relevant certification.
Agriculture and Rural Development Agricultural extension officers, environmental officers, conservation staff, administrative clerks. BSc Agriculture or Diploma for technical roles; Grade 12 for support roles.
Department of Human Settlements Housing officers, town planners, project administrators, construction supervisors, data capturers. Grade 12 for admin and support; town planning or built environment degree for professional roles.
Internships and graduate programmes All departments offer internship and learnership opportunities targeted at graduates and unemployed youth. These are typically advertised between January and March each year. Recently completed degree, diploma, or National Certificate relevant to the department.

Internships and learnerships: Every year, most Gauteng government departments advertise internship and learnership programmes for recent graduates and unemployed youth. These are typically posted between January and April. They are among the most competitive positions on the portal, but they provide an essential entry point for young South Africans starting their careers. If you are a recent graduate, check the portal in January, February, and March specifically for these opportunities.

Troubleshooting the GPG Portal: Fixes for the Most Common Problems

The GPG Professional Job Centre has a number of known technical issues that affect applicants regularly. The table below covers the most common problems, why they happen, and how to fix them:

Problem Why It Happens How to Fix It
‘Incomplete Profile’ error — cannot apply This is the most reported problem on the GPG portal. It means one or more sections of your profile have not been completed or saved correctly. The system does not always specify which section is incomplete. Go to your profile (Update Profile) and check each section carefully: personal details, contact information, qualifications, and work experience. Make sure every section is saved individually. Even if a field appears filled, re-enter and save it again. If the problem persists, call 0860 011 000 early in the morning before the lines get busy.
Work experience section will not save A common technical glitch on the portal. Experience entries sometimes fail to save, especially if the entry has dates that overlap or a field is left blank. Ensure every field in the experience section is filled, including end dates (use the current date if you are still employed). Save each entry individually. If using a phone, try switching to a desktop computer or laptop for this section, as the mobile version has more glitches.
Cannot upload documents — old documents keep appearing The portal caches previously uploaded documents. Trying to upload new versions can trigger a conflict if the system references the old files. Try clearing your browser cache and cookies, then log in again and attempt the upload with a fresh session. If the problem continues, try a different browser (Chrome is generally most compatible with the GPG portal). Call 0860 011 000 if the issue persists.
Forgot password and can no longer access linked email You registered with an email address you no longer have access to, making the standard password reset impossible. Email E-Recruitment@gauteng.gov.za with your full name and ID number, explaining that you cannot access your registered email. Alternatively, visit the walk-in centre at 77 Fox Street, Marshalltown with your ID document and ask for assistance with your account.
Password has been revoked Accounts can be locked or revoked after multiple incorrect login attempts or prolonged inactivity. Go to the Forgot Password page on the portal and follow the prompts. If your email is still accessible, a reset link will be sent. If you are still blocked, contact E-Recruitment@gauteng.gov.za or call 011 689 5000.
The ‘Apply’ button does not appear on a vacancy This usually means your profile is flagged as incomplete, or the vacancy has passed its closing date, or you do not meet the screening criteria the system is checking. Confirm the vacancy closing date has not passed. Check your profile for completeness. Read the vacancy criteria carefully to confirm you meet the stated requirements before expecting to see the apply button.
You received no reference number after applying This may mean your application was not submitted successfully, or the confirmation was sent to an email you do not have access to. Log in to your account and check your application history. If the application does not appear there, it was not submitted. Resubmit before the closing date. If it does appear, call 0860 011 000 and ask them to confirm receipt using your ID number.
Application submitted but no feedback after 3 months This is standard. The GPG does not contact unsuccessful applicants. If you have not received communication after 3 months from the closing date, your application was not successful. Do not call to follow up on unsuccessful applications — this is stated explicitly in GPG policy. Only call to follow up on an application if you have been shortlisted for interview. Apply again for future vacancies that suit your qualifications.

Best browser and time to use the portal: Chrome is the most compatible browser. Avoid using Internet Explorer or older versions of Edge. The portal tends to be slower between 8am and 10am when server load is highest. Trying to complete applications in the early afternoon or evening usually results in fewer technical problems. If you are using a phone, switch to desktop mode in your browser settings for better compatibility.

Tips for a Stronger GPG Application

Thousands of applications are submitted for popular GPG vacancies. These practical steps will improve the quality of your submission and your chances of being shortlisted:

Only apply if you genuinely meet the minimum requirements

GPG applications are screened against the minimum requirements listed in the vacancy advertisement. If you do not have the specified qualification, experience, or professional registration, your application will be screened out before a human even reads your CV. Every application takes time and effort. Spend that time on positions you actually qualify for.

Tailor your CV to the specific vacancy

Government recruiters read many CVs for every position. A CV that speaks directly to the duties and requirements listed in the vacancy advertisement is far more effective than a generic one. Read the ‘Duties’ and ‘Requirements’ sections of the advertisement and ensure your CV describes your relevant experience in those specific terms.

Submit documents that are correctly certified

This eliminates one of the most common reasons for disqualification after shortlisting. Every certified document must have been certified by SAPS within the last 6 months. Each page should have the certifying officer’s stamp and signature. Documents certified by a notary public or commissioner of oaths at a law firm are also accepted, but SAPS certification is free and available at any police station.

Apply well before the closing date

Do not leave your application to the final day. Technical problems on the portal — slow uploads, session timeouts, document caching issues — are more likely to cause problems when you are racing against a closing date. Submit at least two to three working days before the deadline.

Check your profile completeness before each application

Even if your profile was complete when you last applied, log in and verify it is still showing as complete before each new application. Profile data can occasionally be lost after system maintenance. A quick check takes two minutes and prevents the frustration of the Incomplete Profile error when you most need to apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a GPG job?

Register a free profile at jobs.gauteng.gov.za using your ID number as your username. Complete your full profile (personal details, qualifications, and work experience). Find a vacancy you qualify for. Prepare your documents: Z83 form, CV, certified ID, and certified qualifications. Log in and click Apply on the vacancy. Complete the application form and upload your documents. Save your reference number after submission.

Do I need to register to browse GPG vacancies?

No. You can browse all current vacancies without registering. You only need a registered profile to apply.

Why does my GPG profile say ‘Incomplete Profile’?

This means one or more sections of your profile have not been completed or saved correctly. Go to the Update Profile section and check each section: personal details, contact details, qualifications, and work experience. Re-enter and save each section individually. If the problem persists, call 0860 011 000. This is the most commonly reported problem on the portal and is almost always resolved by carefully re-checking and saving each section.

How long does it take to hear back about a GPG application?

There is no fixed feedback timeline. The GPG’s stated policy is that if you have not received any communication within 3 months of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. The GPG does not contact unsuccessful applicants. If you are shortlisted for an interview, the relevant department will contact you directly.

Can I apply in person if I don’t have internet access?

Yes. There are two walk-in centres where staff can assist you: 77 Fox Street, Marshalltown, Johannesburg, and the Thusong Service Centre at Maponya Mall. Bring your ID, all required documents, and the reference number of the vacancy you want to apply for.

What is the Z83 form and where do I get it?

The Z83 is the official South African public service employment application form. The current version was introduced on 1 January 2021. You must use this version — older versions result in automatic disqualification. Download the Z83 for free at jobs.gauteng.gov.za or at dpsa.gov.za/documents. All fields must be completed and the form must be physically signed.

Can I apply for GPG jobs if I live outside Gauteng?

Yes. Anyone can apply for GPG vacancies regardless of where they currently live. However, most positions require you to be based in Gauteng and you would be expected to relocate if appointed. The vacancy advertisement will state the working location.

What happens if I forget my GPG password?

Go to the login page and click ‘Forgot Password’. If you can still access your registered email, a reset link will be sent to you. If you can no longer access your registered email, send a message to E-Recruitment@gauteng.gov.za with your full name and ID number, or visit the walk-in centre at 77 Fox Street with your ID document.

Is the GPG Professional Job Centre the same as the DPSA Vacancy Circular?

No. These are two different platforms. The GPG Professional Job Centre (jobs.gauteng.gov.za) is for Gauteng Provincial Government positions only. The DPSA Vacancy Circular (published every Friday at dpsa.gov.za) covers all national and provincial government positions across South Africa. If you want to apply for a national government department such as SAPS, Home Affairs, or Social Development, you must use the DPSA circular and submit applications directly to those departments.

Getting Started: Your Next Step

The GPG Professional Job Centre has thousands of vacancies across dozens of departments, and new positions are posted every week. If you are looking for stable, structured employment with the Gauteng Provincial Government, this portal is your direct route in.

Go to jobs.gauteng.gov.za right now. Browse the current vacancies. If you find a position that matches your qualifications and experience, register your profile today. Take the extra time to complete every section of your profile correctly, download and complete the Z83 form, and submit your application well before the closing date.

The application process has its frustrations, particularly the technical issues with profile completeness and document uploads. But the positions are real, the jobs are permanent, and the benefits are significant. Patience and careful preparation are what separate successful GPG applicants from those who give up after the first technical hurdle.
