If you want your business to succeed you need a website, it is honestly as simple as that. The reason for this is that we live in a world of instant gratification where people want their information available at the touch of a button. Your potential and existing clients need quick access to information about your company when they want it or they will move on to your competitor. There are many ways of supplying this information to your clients but the absolute best is through the use of a well designed website.
So how exactly should you go about setting up a website for yourself?
The thought of it might be quite daunting if you have never been through the process before. Don’t let this deter you, the truth is that it is actually quite simple. Lets answer a few important questions before we carry on, namely;
1) “What is a website?
2) “What is a hosting company?”
3) “What is a domain name.”
So first question and possibly the most important, What is a Website?
Simply put a website is a collection of documents, files, images and videos in some cases which have been stored in a location which is accessible by the world wide web. Websites are stored on special computers called servers. Fortunately it is NOT necessary for you to own a server as this would make setting up a website very expensive, there are many companies which provide servers for you to store your website on.
What is a hosting company?
A website hosting company is an organisation which provides the servers for you to store your website. They would also provide the technologies and services needed for your website to be viewed on the Internet. A great example of a hosting company is Afrihost, I have been dealing with them for many years and I am continually impressed with their fantastic service.
What is a domain name?
Sometimes referred to as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), this is the address on the Internet where your clients will find your website. A domain name would typically look like this www.yourbusiness.co.za. You can register a domain name through the .co.za registry but every website hosting company would do this for you and most good companies offer a one year free domain name. Choosing a good domain name is very important, your website design company should offer you some advice on this.
Ok, so now that that is out of the way lets get down to the real reason you are here. How do you go about setting up your website?
Well one of the easiest ways is to sign up with a company which provides a free website builder. One such company is Wix. With Wix you are able to launch a free website using their simple website building toolkit, your would also get free hosting by using this service. Now I know you are thinking, “Wow this sounds great, I’m definitely doing that”, But wait, although you can design a great looking website using the Wix free service there are some downsides. The first downside is that your domain name would look something like this www.wixsite.yourbusiness.com, in my opinion a domain name like this does not look very professional and most importantly it is not going to feature well in search results when your clients use Google to find a business such as yours, not to mention the fact that a .com extension will make your site slightly slower then .co.za extensions in South Africa. It is quite likely in fact that your website would never ever feature in the first few pages of google with a wixsite domain name. At least I have never seen one, have you? You are able to sign up for a paid package with wix, with this option you would get a personalised domain name, however this is cost you a little over R3500 a year (without email and still a .com extension) plus you would still need to build the website yourself using their website builder toolkit. The other problem with Wix is that, and this is my personal opinion, they do not adjust to mobile view exceptionally well. Having a mobile responsive site is so important these days.
So what is the best option if you want a professional looking mobile responsive website?
Well, hire a Pro of course! How much is this going to cost you? Obviously the size and type of website you need is going to affect the total cost, however a standard website from Bizcraft will cost you about R850.
The great thing about using a professional designer is that they can offer advice along the way. There are many things to consider when building a site, especially if you would like your website to perform well in search engine results. An understanding of keywords and long tailed keywords can make or break your websites success and your website designer will have some insight into this. Another fantastic service that your website design company might offer is assistance with the hosting and domain name registration. Bizcraft will take care of all these details plus the design of your website with monthly maintenance for only R289/pm.
